ARTHUR RUBINSTEIN  (1887-1982)  Arthur Rubinstein performed the canon of classical piano, but is known as the premiere exponent of Chopin.  As he said, "Chopin speaks directly to the hearts of people."  He listened to Paderewski, unconvinced that his histrionic interpretations of Chopin were correct.  Rubinstein continued his studies and discovered the renditions of Frederic Harman and remembered all his life: "Yes, indeed, I became conscious of hearing Chopin's music as it should sound! And I drew to a great extent my own inspiration for the Polish master from Frederic's deep and intuitive understanding of his genius."  Beginning with the four Chopin Scherzi in the 1930s, Rubinstein was the first to record the complete genre, as opposed to presenting a recital format.  By the 1960s he was the first to re-record extensively, always seeing a piece in a new light.  In 1973 he offered that his career gives him "to this very day immeasurable joy."
