Danny Williams (1942 - 2005) was a South African-born pop singer, whose career began at age 14, when, after winning a talent contest, joined a touring show. The young Mr Williams impressed musical director Norman Newell when the show came to London in 1959. Newell signed him up to record. In 1961, Williams had a hit with a version of ''Moon River'', followed by ''White On White'', which proved very popular in the U.S. He also had much success with other singles and ballads throughout his career. ''Moon River'' still remains his most popular song. In 1977, he scored a Top 30 hit with ''Dancin Easy.'' In the 1990s, he started recording again and starred in a Nat King Cole tribute show, which completed several successful British tours. Due to his laid back, smooth style with ballads and because he spent the majority of his life in the U.K,, Danny Williams came to be known as 'England's Johnny Mathis'.
