One of the most influential artists in the history of recorded music, Duke Ellington (1899-1974) was also one of the greatest jazz figures.  He elevated the perception of jazz to an artistic level on par with that of classical music.

As an example of his extraordinary ability, while Duke Ellington was 15 and working as a soda jerk, he created "Soda Fountain Rag" as a one-step, two-step, waltz, tango, and fox trot before he could read or write music.  His listeners never knew it was the same piece!  He'd started assembling his repertoire.
