Kathlyn Elizabeth Smith (1907-1986) was an American singer, best known for rendition of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." Kate Smith sang the patriotic song in the 1943 wartime movie, "This is the Army." The Philadelphia Flyers hockey team played it before some of their games and felt that playing it helped them win. Kate doesn’t read a note of music. “I don’t vocalize and I don’t rehearse,” she says. “I don’t need to. The only time I sing is when I get up there to perform."
