MARY MARTIN  (1913- 1990)  Mary Martin was born in Weatherford, Texas, in 1913 and passed away at her Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs home in November 1990.  She had burst onto the Broadway scene in LEAVE IT TO ME! in 1938, always acknowledging the stage instructions given to her by fellow player Sophie Tucker.  She sojourned to Hollywood and returned to triumph in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS in 1943.  She toured in that until 1945, taking the advice of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne to tour the provinces: "Then when they are in New York, they will come to see you."  It was SOUTH PACIFIC in 1949 that guaranteed her permanent position in the Broadway firmament and PETER PAN, THE SOUND OF MUSIC and I DO! I DO! made her Broadway's co-First Lady.  Unlike Merman, Martin toured extensively, taking HELLO, DOLLY! across the United States, to Japan, to Viet Nam and to London.
