Born Mary Frances Penick, she was called Skeeter by her grandfather because she had a lot of energy for a young child (like a mosquito). Skeeter Davis was one of the first women to achieve major stardom in the field of country music as a solo vocalist. Her single "The End of the World" in 1963 was in the top ten of four of Billboard's charts, a feat that has never been equaled by another female singer in the history of Billboard's charts.
